Get Enough Sleep

Don’t overlook the importance of getting enough rest. Research shows that a lack of quality sleep can dramatically weaken your immune system. Ideally, you should strive to get at least seven hours of sleep a night. Not only is fatigue detrimental to your health, it is also a leading cause of truck accidents. These beverages can contain large amounts of caffeine, which hinders your ability to wind down and relax.

Regardless of where you go, germs will always be present. No trucker looks forward to getting sick. To help curb your risk of catching a cold, develop a habit of regularly washing your hands with soap and water. It’s also a good idea to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on deck.

Protect Your Mental Health

Some truckers can experience chronic loneliness while on the road. To avoid feeling isolated from everyone, be sure to keep an open line of communication with your family and friends. If you begin to feel a bit down, don’t hesitate to reach out to someone. Talking to a buddy could instantly brighten your day. Humor is known to brighten the mood, so compile a playlist of your favorite comedians. Furthermore, you may want to consider bringing along a pet. Nothing beats having a loyal companion by your side.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration often leads to truckers feeling sluggish and lightheaded, thus increasing the risk of a fatigue-related crash. You should be consuming fresh water throughout the day. While it’s okay to drink a soda now and then, the best approach is to seek healthier alternatives. Some good options include fruit-infused water, plant-based milk, freshly squeezed lemonade, and sparkling water.
